Saint-Gobain MARITRANS Aliphatic Polyurethane Membrane Liquid

Saint-Gobain MARITRANS is a one-component, transparent, hard-elastic, high-solids, solvent-based polyurethane membrane used for long-lasting waterproofing. It's designed for cold application and cures by reacting with atmospheric moisture. This high-technology coating is notably UV-stable, meaning it won't yellow over time, and offers excellent resistance to weathering, alkalis, and various chemicals. Even after ageing, MARITRANS remains transparent and elastic. It's often used where a clear, durable, and protective waterproofing layer is required, allowing the original substrate to be visible while providing reliable protection against water ingress. MARITRANS is suitable for waterproofing balconies, terraces, ceramic surfaces, glass, glass bricks, wood, and transparent plastics, as well as for protecting natural stones. It can also be used as a transparent binder resin for sand or stone carpet flooring, particularly in exterior spaces where flexibility and UV stability are needed.

APPLICATION

• Used for the waterproofing of balconies and terraces, ceramic surfaces, glass and glass-bricks, wood, transparent plastics (e.g. polyacrylate, polycarbonate) and for the protection of natural stones. 
• Used as a transparent binder resin for sand/stone carpet flooring applications, especially in exterior spaces, where flexibility and UV stability are required.

How to use

• The substrate must be absolutely clean, dry, and free from any dust, dirt, grease, oils, loose particles, waxes, silicones, or any other contaminants that could interfere with adhesion. For porous surfaces, ensure they are free of any rising moisture.   
• Ceramic Tiles, Glass, Glass Bricks, Non-Porous Surfaces: Clean thoroughly with a suitable cleaner to remove any residues. Light abrasion may be needed in some cases to improve adhesion. Ensure the surface is completely dry.
• Wood: Ensure the wood is sound, dry (moisture content should be within acceptable limits), and free from any loose coatings or treatments. Light sanding may be beneficial to create a key.
• Transparent Plastics: Ensure they are clean and free from scratches or damage. Test adhesion on a small, inconspicuous area first, as some plastics may not bond well.
• Natural Stone: Clean thoroughly to remove any dirt, dust, or efflorescence. Ensure it is completely dry.
• Sand/Stone Carpet Binder: The aggregate (sand or small stones) must be clean, dry, and free from dust and fines.
• Generally, a primer is not required for MARITRANS on many non-porous surfaces. However, for porous substrates or to enhance adhesion on certain materials, the manufacturer may recommend a specific primer. Always consult the Maritrans technical data sheet for specific recommendations based on the substrate.
• MARITRANS is a one-component product, so thorough stirring before use is essential to ensure uniformity. 
• Waterproofing: Apply MARITRANS using a brush or roller. For larger, flat areas, a short-pile roller is often preferred to achieve a smooth, even finish. Apply in thin, even coats. Multiple thin coats are better than one thick coat to ensure proper curing and transparency. Allow each coat to become touch-dry before applying the next. Typically, 2-3 coats are recommended to achieve the desired waterproofing thickness. Avoid pooling or runs.
• Transparent Binder for Sand/Stone Carpet: Mix MARITRANS thoroughly with the clean, dry aggregate in the recommended ratio (refer to the technical data sheet). Apply the mixture evenly using a trowel, screed, or other appropriate tool to achieve the desired thickness and finish.
• Be aware that MARITRANS is solvent-based, and evaporation will begin immediately. Work efficiently once the container is opened.   
• Apply MARITRANS in dry weather conditions with a temperature range as specified in the technical data sheet (typically between +5°C and +35°C). Avoid application in direct sunlight or high humidity, which can affect the curing process and final appearance. Ensure adequate ventilation in the work area.
• The curing time will depend on the ambient temperature, humidity, and the thickness of the applied layers. MARITRANS will typically be touch-dry within a few hours, but full curing and development of its final properties can take several days (refer to the technical data sheet).
• Protect the freshly applied MARITRANS from rain, dust, and foot traffic during the initial curing phase. For sand/stone carpets, avoid heavy use until fully cured.
• Once cured, inspect the surface for any imperfections, unevenness, or areas with insufficient coverage. Additional thin coats can be applied to touch up any such areas, ensuring the previous coat is clean and dry.
• Clean application tools immediately after use with the appropriate solvent (as recommended in the technical data sheet, typically a solvent-based cleaner). Once cured, MARITRANS is very difficult to remove.

• Always consult the official MARITRANS technical data sheet for detailed instructions, including specific substrate preparation guidelines, recommended primers (if any), application rates, mixing ratios for aggregate (if using as a binder), curing times, and safety precautions. This document is the primary source of information for proper application.
• Perform a test application on a small, inconspicuous area first, especially on sensitive or unusual substrates, to ensure compatibility and the desired aesthetic result.
• Ensure adequate ventilation during application due to the solvent content.
• Wear appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves, eye protection, and respiratory protection (especially in enclosed spaces).   
• Store MARITRANS according to the manufacturer's instructions, away from heat and open flames.
