Saint-Gobain MARISEAL Aqua Primer B - Water-based Epoxy Primer
MARISEAL Aqua Primer B is a is the second part of a two-component, water-based epoxy primer designed to improve the adhesion of MARISEAL waterproofing membranes and coatings to porous substrates. It's a low-VOC, environmentally friendly primer that penetrates the surface, providing a solid foundation for subsequent layers. This primer is typically used on substrates such as concrete, screed, and other cementitious surfaces to seal pores, reduce outgassing, and enhance the bond strength of the waterproofing system. Being a two-component product, it requires mixing before application, ensuring a chemical reaction that leads to a durable and well-prepared surface for the application of MARISEAL liquid membranes.
Consumption: 0.10-0.20 kg/m2 in one or two layers
- Transparent
- Available sizes: 0.25 kg, 1 kg, 5 kg
APPLICATION
- Used in combination with polyurethane waterproofing coatings, polyurethane joint sealants and polyurethane and epoxy floor coatings on non-absorbent, semi-absorbent or absorbent surfaces like: concrete or power floated concrete, wood, metal (various), asphalt, bitumen felts, old acryl-based coatings, etc.
CHARACTERISTICS
- Part B of two-component, water-based epoxy primer.
- Specifically designed for porous substrates.
- Improves adhesion of MARISEAL waterproofing membranes and coatings.
- Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) content.
- Environmentally friendly formulation.
- Penetrates the substrate to seal pores.
- Reduces outgassing from the substrate.
- Enhances the bond strength of the waterproofing system.
- Suitable for concrete, screed, and other cementitious surfaces.
- Requires mixing of the two components before use.
- Provides a durable and well-prepared surface for subsequent layers.
- Easy to apply.
- Water-based, making for easier clean-up of tools.
How to use
- The substrate must be clean, dry, and free from any dust, dirt, grease, oils, loose particles, laitance (the powdery layer on new concrete), or other contaminants that could impair adhesion.
- Prepare the surface using appropriate mechanical methods such as grinding, blasting, or thorough scrubbing followed by rinsing with clean water (ensure the surface is sufficiently dry before priming).
- Ensure the substrate is porous, as this primer is designed to penetrate. Very smooth or non-porous surfaces may require a different primer.
- The moisture content of the substrate should be within the limits specified in the MARISEAL Aqua Primer technical data sheet. Typically, it should be reasonably dry.
- Carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions for the correct mixing ratio of Part A and Part B. This is crucial for the primer to cure properly and achieve the desired properties.
- Pour the entire contents of Part B into the container of Part A.
- Stir the mixture thoroughly using a low-speed mechanical mixer (e.g., drill with a mixing paddle) for the time specified in the technical data sheet (usually 2-3 minutes).
- Ensure that the mixture is homogeneous and free of streaks or lumps. Scrape the sides and bottom of the container during mixing to ensure all material is properly combined.
- Be aware of the primer's pot life (working time) after mixing. Once the two components are mixed, the chemical reaction begins, and the primer will start to harden. Apply the mixed primer within the pot life specified in the technical data sheet. Do not use any primer that has exceeded its pot life as it may not adhere properly.
- Apply the mixed MARISEAL Aqua Primer using a brush, roller, or airless spray. A roller is often the most practical method for larger areas.
- Apply a thin, even coat of primer, ensuring full coverage of the substrate. Avoid pooling or excessive build-up. Follow the recommended consumption rate specified in the technical data sheet. The aim is to saturate the surface pores without leaving a thick film.
- Allow the primer to dry completely before applying the subsequent MARISEAL waterproofing membrane or coating. The drying time will depend on the ambient temperature and humidity. Refer to the technical data sheet for specific drying times. The primer should typically be touch-dry and not tacky before the next layer is applied.
- After the primer has dried, inspect the surface to ensure it is uniformly primed and free of any unprimed areas.
- Apply the MARISEAL waterproofing membrane or coating within the recoating window specified in the primer's technical data sheet. If the re-coating window is exceeded, you may need to lightly abrade or re-prime the surface to ensure proper inter-coat adhesion.
- Clean application tools immediately after use with water while the primer is still wet. Once cured, it will be difficult to remove.
Important Considerations:
- Always consult the official MARISEAL Aqua Primer technical data sheet for detailed instructions, including mixing ratios, pot life, application rates, drying times, and safety precautions.
- Ensure adequate ventilation during mixing and application.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and eye protection.
- Avoid applying the primer at very low temperatures or when the substrate temperature is below the dew point.
- Store the primer components according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Protect from freezing.
