Engobe refers to a white or coloured slip applied to pottery, usually for decoration or to improve the surface texture. Essentially, it’s a mixture of clay and water, sometimes containing additional elements like deflocculants (which prevent particle agglomeration) and fluxes (which lower melting points). Engobe sits between slip and glaze in terms of properties, making it suitable as a primer to unite clay and glaze layers.
In the world of ceramics, there are three main types of engobes:
- Classic Engobe: This type consists of barbotine (a slip made from clay and water) with the addition of 1% to 10% color oxides. It’s commonly used for decoration and can change the colour and texture of ceramic pieces.
- Glazed Engobes: Also known as enamel glazes, these engobes contain approximately 30% to 50% glaze composition. They combine water, slip, and clay to create a unique finish. Glazed engobes add depth and shine to ceramics.
- Engobe with Clay Glaze: This type blends clay glaze with engobe, resulting in a combination of both techniques. It allows for creative effects and variations in colour and texture.
